A Special Project for the German Consulate General
New York
Produced by Todd Weinstein Production · Steve Zehentner and prospektstudio.com
“Everywhere immigrants have enriched and strengthened the fabric of American life.” — John F. Kennedy
Germans have been coming to America for over 400 years.
Assimilating into an American mainstream they
helped create. German-Americans have made enormous cultural, economic, and
political contributions. The
famous faces among them include Fred Astaire, Marlene Dietrich, Albert Einstein,
Babe Ruth, Gertrude Stein
and Lillian Wald.
In this film, you’ll meet descendents of the families
who created three enduring New York City icons: The
John Roebling family and the Brooklyn Bridge, the Lazarus Straus family
and Macy’s department store
(the largest in the world!) and the Heinrich Steinway family and the Steinway
piano factory. Their lives and
legacies are representative of the thousands of German-American families
who have put their special mark
on New York City.
As filmmakers we picked German American families who
express their personal family stories and how they
themselves continue to explore their Germany heritage. We are grateful to
Kriss Roebling, Paul Kurzman and
Henry Steinway for sharing their personal stories.
